Manal Murangi is a Baltimore based, Egyptian Namibian American, documentary artist and scholar working with lens based mediums since 2018. While she first pursued narrative filmmaking, a pivotal internship aboard the OceanXplorer in 2022 drew her to documentary filmmaking. She received a B.A. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2021.

Murangi’s practice now features intimate and iterative curiosity about nature and the mirrors it holds to humanity. Drawing from the works of Carrie Mae Weems and Ja’Tovia Gary, Murangi experiments with visual elements of Afrofuturism, Blue Humanities, and Black Feminist Theory to explore her communities and heritage in historical and contemporary contexts.

She has worked with organizations such as NewportFilm, the University of Rhode Island, OceanNexus, NOAA Ocean Exploration, Black in Marine Science, and Ocean Exploration Trust.
