ABOUT THE ARTIST

Manal Murangi

they/she

I am a multidisciplinary documentary artist focused on lens based mediums. My heritage as an Egyptian-Namibian American and upbringing in the cultural mecca of Silver Spring, Maryland, introduced me to the multitudes of perspectives within my community and around the globe, and inspired my love of documentary production.

Working across digital photography, film photography, and video, my body of work is driven by intense curiosity about the natural world and my desire to explore connections between humanity and nature. My video practice is grounded in these stories in historical and contemporary contexts ranging from subject matter such as Black food sovereignty, climate anxiety, and deep sea ocean exploration.

I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island, creating a documentary submerged in the rich and intimate relationships to water in the SWANA (Southwest Asian North African) diaspora.
